The ASUS PRIME Z790M-PLUS is a micro ATX motherboard built around the Intel Z790 chipset and LGA1700 processor socket. Part of the ASUS Prime series, it is engineered to support 12th and 13th Generation Intel Core processors as well as compatible Intel Pentium Gold and Celeron processors. Designed for PC builders who require extensive configuration and performance-tuning options in a compact 24.4 cm by 24.4 cm format, the board combines a robust power system, comprehensive cooling controls, DDR5 memory support, PCIe expansion, M.2 and SATA storage connectivity, Gigabit Ethernet, onboard display connections and 8-channel HD Audio.
Power delivery is handled by a 10+1 teamed power-stage design. Each stage integrates high-side and low-side MOSFETs together with the associated drivers in a package rated at 50 A, providing the electrical foundation required for efficient, stable processor operation and performance. ASUS DIGI+ VRM technology provides precise digital voltage regulation with real-time management of voltage droop and automatic adjustment of switching frequency and power-efficiency parameters. It also gives users the ability to fine-tune processor operation for stability and performance.
ASUS ProCool power connectors reinforce the connection between the motherboard and power supply. The processor power arrangement uses 4-pin and 8-pin ATX12V connections to deliver 12 V power directly to the CPU, while solid connector pins are designed to carry more current than conventional hollow-pin designs. The motherboard additionally uses a standard 24-pin main power connector.
Thermal management is supported by substantial VRM heatsinks with a large surface area covering the voltage-regulation components and chokes. Specially designed thermal pads assist heat transfer away from the MOSFETs and chokes and into the heatsinks. The PRIME Z790M-PLUS also provides comprehensive cooling controls, including a dedicated AIO water-pump header that accommodates PWM and DC operation for self-contained liquid-cooling systems. Its onboard 4-pin fan headers can automatically identify PWM or DC fans, while a dedicated protection circuit safeguards each fan header against excessive current and overheating.
Energy-management functionality gives users several ways to reduce system power consumption. The available Power Saving controls can impose a CPU power limit, reduce Aura lighting brightness and apply a fan profile intended for lower power use. The system can also enable the Power Saver plan integrated into Microsoft Windows, bringing several energy-saving controls together for convenient configuration.
The motherboard provides four 288-pin DIMM slots for up to 128 GB of unbuffered DDR5 memory using a dual-channel memory architecture. Supported standard memory speeds include 4800 MHz, 5000 MHz, 5200 MHz, 5400 MHz and 5600 MHz, with overclocked memory frequencies of 5800 MHz, 6000 MHz, 6200 MHz, 6400 MHz, 6600 MHz, 6800 MHz, 7000 MHz and 7200 MHz. Memory support includes non-ECC modules with on-die ECC functionality, along with Intel Extreme Memory Profiles (XMP) and ASUS Enhanced Memory Profile II. ASUS OptiMem II is also incorporated among the board's memory-related hardware features.
For graphics cards and other expansion hardware, the PRIME Z790M-PLUS supplies one PCIe 5.0 x16 slot, one PCIe 4.0 x16 slot operating in x4 mode and two PCIe 4.0 x1 slots. Its M.2 connectivity includes two Key M sockets accepting 2242, 2260 and 2280 devices, a further Key M socket supporting 2260 and 2280 devices, and one Key E M.2 socket. ASUS SafeSlot Core+, Q-Slot and Q-DIMM features are also included to support the board's expansion and component installation design.
Storage can be connected through four SATA-600 ports and three M.2 storage sockets. Two M.2 storage connections use PCIe 4.0, while another supports SATA-600 or PCIe 4.0 operation. RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5 and RAID 10 configurations are supported across the specified storage interfaces, and Intel Rapid Storage Technology is included as a RAID feature. Two Serial ATA cables and two M.2 SSD screw packages are supplied with the motherboard.
The external connection selection covers both current and legacy USB requirements. Rear connectivity includes one USB-C 3.2 Gen 2x2 port, one USB 3.2 Gen 2 port, four USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports and two USB 2.0 ports. Internal headers provide connectivity for one additional USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 connection, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 connections and four USB 2.0 connections. Other internal interfaces comprise an audio header, serial header, SPDIF output header, SPI header and Thunderbolt header.
DisplayPort and HDMI outputs are integrated for systems using processor-supported onboard graphics, with a compatible CPU required for graphics functionality. Networking is provided through Gigabit Ethernet and includes ASUS LANGuard, while Wake on LAN functionality allows compatible network-based wake-up operation. The motherboard also supports wake on PME and Preboot eXecution Environment functionality.
Audio is provided through an 8-channel High Definition Audio implementation. External analogue connections consist of audio line-out, microphone and audio line-in mini-jacks. Audio functionality also includes jack detection and jack retasking, while the internal SPDIF output and audio headers provide further connection options.
The PRIME Z790M-PLUS uses an AMI BIOS with UEFI functionality and includes ASUS EZ Flash 3 and ASUS UEFI BIOS EZ Mode. CrashFree BIOS 3 and ASUS EZ DIY are among the additional board features intended to support system configuration and maintenance. The motherboard also incorporates Q-LED Core and ASUS Q-Design functionality.
A broad set of ASUS and Intel platform technologies is incorporated into the board, including Intel Turbo Boost Max Technology 3.0, Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0, ASUS 5X Protection III, ASUS Aura Sync, ASUS DIGI+ VRM, ASUS ProCool, ASUS SafeSlot Core+, ASUS Stainless Steel Back I/O, overvoltage protection, ASUS Enhanced Memory Profile II and the VRM heatsink design. The supplied software collection consists of Armoury Crate, ASUS Fan Xpert 4, ASUS AI Suite III, ASUS CPU-Z, ASUS TurboV EVO Utility, PC Cleaner and WinRAR, together with a 60-day trial of Norton 360 Deluxe. An I/O shield is also included with the motherboard.
